This intensive, one-day hands-on course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to proficiently conduct evidential breath alcohol tests in accordance with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Participants will learn the complete testing process, from the initial interaction with an employee to the proper completion of the Alcohol Testing Form (ATF). The course focuses on accuracy, chain of custody, and legal defensibility. Upon successful completion, participants will be certified to conduct Alcohol tests and manage a workplace alcohol testing program.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the key DOT alcohol testing rules and regulations (Gold Standard).
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of the BAT, Employer, and Service Agent.
  • Correctly operate an evidential breath testing device (EBT) approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • Conduct a complete breath alcohol test sequence, including the screening and confirmation tests.
  • Accurately complete the Alcohol Testing Form (ATF) and manage the chain of custody.
  • Handle procedural errors, refusals to test, and shy lung situations appropriately.
  • Maintain and calibrate the EBT as required.
  • Ensure the entire testing process is impartial, professional, and legally defensible.

This is an in-person, hands-on course utilizing:

  • Expert Lecture: Led by experienced instructor.
  • Regulatory Deep Dive: Guided review of FRSC Acts on DUI.
  • Live Demonstrations: Step-by-step showing of the testing process.
  • Practical Hands-On Workshops: Participants practice on real EBT devices such as Jupiter Breathalyser.
  • Scenario-Based Role-Playing: Practicing real-world situations like awkward employee interactions or potential refusals.
  • Q&A and Group Discussion: Addressing specific workplace challenges.
  • Multiple Choice Question and Practical Skills Assessment: To ensure competency and grant certification.

One-Day Course Schedule (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)

  •  Welcome, Introductions, and Course Overview 9:00 – 9:30 AM
    • The importance of BAT qualification and regulatory compliance.
  •  Module 1: Regulatory Framework : 9:30 – 10:30 AM
    • Overview of FRSC Agency Rules.
    • Definitions: What constitutes a refusal? What is a shy lung?
    • Employer, BAT, and Employee responsibilities.
    • Q&A Session.
  • Morning Break  10:30 – 11:00 AM
  •  Module 2: The Testing Equipment  11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Introduction to Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) Devices.
    • NHTSA-Conforming Products List (CPL).
    • Device Calibration, Quality Assurance, and Maintenance Checks.
    • Understanding the “Blank” and “Air Blank” requirements.
  •  Lunch Break: 12:00 – 12:45 PM
  • Module 3: The Testing: 12:45 – 2:30 PM
  • Procedure – Step-by-Step (Practical Workshop)
    • Step 1: Employee arrival and initial interaction.
    • Step 2: The 15-minute observation period.
    • Step 3: Device preparation and checks.
    • Step 4: The screening test.
    • Step 5: The confirmation test (when required).
    • Step 6: Reading and interpreting results.
    • Hands-On Practice: Each participant will perform multiple mock tests on live equipment under instructor supervision.
  • Module 4: Documentation and Problem-Solving 2:30 – 3:00 PM
    • Completing the ATF: A line-by-line review of the Alcohol Testing Form. Common errors to avoid.
    • Chain of Custody: Ensuring integrity from test to result.
    • Handling Irregularities: What to do in case of an invalid result, device malfunction, or employee behavior issues.
    • Scenario Role-Play: Practicing difficult conversations and identifying refusals.
  • Module 5: Final Assessment & Certification : 3:00 – 5:00 PM
    • Written Examination: Closed-book or Multiple Choice Questions test on regulations and procedures.
    • Practical Skills Assessment: Each participant must successfully conduct a full mock test from start to finish, including proper form completion.
    • Review of Exams, Q&A.
    • Presentation of Certificates to successful participants.
